c++: modules and #pragma diagnostic
To respect the #pragma diagnostic lines in libstdc++ headers when compiling with module std, we need to represent them in the module. I think it's reasonable to give serializers direct access to the underlying data, as here with get_classification_history. This is a different approach from how Jakub made PCH streaming members of diagnostic_option_classifier, but it seems to me that modules handling belongs in module.cc. libcpp/ChangeLog: * line-map.cc (linemap_location_from_module_p): Add. * include/line-map.h: Declare it. gcc/ChangeLog: * diagnostic.h (diagnostic_option_classifier): Friend diagnostic_context. (diagnostic_context::get_classification_history): New. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * module.cc (module_state::write_diagnostic_classification): New. (module_state::write_begin): Call it. (module_state::read_diagnostic_classification): New. (module_state::read_initial): Call it. diagnostics: make experimental-html sink prettier [PR116792]
This patch to the "experimental-html" diagnostic sink:
* adds use of the PatternFly 3 CSS library (via an optional link
in the generated html to a copy in a CDN)
* uses PatternFly's "alert" pattern to show severities for diagnostics,
properly nesting "note" diagnostics for diagnostic groups.
Example:
before: https://dmalcolm.fedorapeople.org/gcc/2025-06-10/before/diagnostic-ranges.c.html
after: https://dmalcolm.fedorapeople.org/gcc/2025-06-10/after/diagnostic-ranges.c.html
* adds initial support for logical locations and physical locations
* adds initial support for multi-level nested diagnostics such as those
for C++ concepts diagnostics. Ideally this would show a clickable
disclosure widget to expand/collapse a level, but for now it uses
nested <ul> elements with <li> for the child diagnostics.
Example:
before: https://dmalcolm.fedorapeople.org/gcc/2025-06-10/before/nested-diagnostics-1.C.html
after: https://dmalcolm.fedorapeople.org/gcc/2025-06-10/after/nested-diagnostics-1.C.html

Support for 64-bit location_t: Activate 64-bit location_t
Change location_t to be a 64-bit integer instead of a 32-bit integer in libcpp. Also included in this change are the two other patches in the original series which depended on this one; I am committing them all at once in case it needs to be reverted later: -Support for 64-bit location_t: gimple parts The size of struct gimple increased by 8 bytes with the change in size of location_t from 32- to 64-bit; adjust the WORD markings in the comments accordingly. It seems that most of the WORD markings were off by one already, probably not having been updated after a previous reduction in the size of a gimple, so they have become retroactively correct again, and only a couple needed adjustment actually. Also add a comment that there is now 32 bits of unused padding available in struct gimple for 64-bit hosts. -Support for 64-bit location_t: Remove -flarge-source-files The option -flarge-source-files became unnecessary with 64-bit location_t and harms performance compared to the new default setting, so silently ignore it. libcpp/ChangeLog: * include/cpplib.h (struct cpp_token): Adjust comment about the struct size. * include/line-map.h (location_t): Change typedef from 32-bit to 64-bit integer. (LINE_MAP_MAX_COLUMN_NUMBER): Increase size to be appropriate for 64-bit location_t. (LINE_MAP_MAX_LOCATION_WITH_PACKED_RANGES): Likewise. (LINE_MAP_MAX_LOCATION_WITH_COLS): Likewise. Rearrange fields to optimize padding. gcc/testsuite/ChangeLog: * g++.dg/diagnostic/pr77949.C: Adapt the test for 64-bit location_t, when the previously expected failure doesn't actually happen. * g++.dg/modules/loc-prune-4.C: Adjust the expected output for the 64-bit location_t case. * gcc.dg/plugin/expensive_selftests_plugin.cc: Don't try to test the maximum supported column number in 64-bit location_t mode. * gcc.dg/plugin/location_overflow_plugin.cc: Adjust the base_location so it can effectively test 64-bit location_t. gcc/ChangeLog: * gimple.h (struct gphi): Update word marking comments to reflect the new size of location_t. (struct gimple): Likewise. Add a comment about padding. * common.opt: Mark -flarge-source-files as Ignored. * common.opt.urls: Regenerate. * doc/invoke.texi: Remove -flarge-source-files. * toplev.cc (process_options): Remove support for -flarge-source-files. |

Support for 64-bit location_t: libcpp preliminaries
Prepare libcpp to support 64-bit location_t, without yet making any functional changes, by adding new typedefs that enable code to be written such that it works with any size location_t. Update the usage of line maps within libcpp accordingly. Subsequent patches will prepare the rest of the codebase similarly, and then afterwards, location_t will be changed to uint64_t. libcpp/ChangeLog: * include/line-map.h (line_map_uint_t): New typedef, the same type as location_t. non-gcc: Remove trailing whitespace
I've tried to build stage3 with -Wleading-whitespace=blanks -Wtrailing-whitespace=blank -Wno-error=leading-whitespace=blanks -Wno-error=trailing-whitespace=blank added to STRICT_WARN and that expectably resulted in about 2744 unique trailing whitespace warnings and 124837 leading whitespace warnings when excluding *.md files (which obviously is in big part a generator issue). Others from that are generator related, I think those need to be solved later. The following patch just fixes up the easy case (trailing whitespace), which could be easily automated: for i in `find . -name \*.h -o -name \*.cc -o -name \*.c | xargs grep -l '[ ]$' | grep -v testsuite/`; do sed -i -e 's/[ ]*$//' $i; done I've excluded files which I knew are obviously generated or go FE. Is there anything else we'd want to avoid the changes? Due to patch size, I've split it between gcc/ part and rest (include/, libiberty/, libgcc/, libcpp/, libstdc++-v3/; this part). 2024-10-24 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> include/ * dyn-string.h: Add instruction level discriminator support.
This is the first in a series of patches to enable discriminator support
in AutoFDO.
This patch switches to tracking discriminators per statement/instruction
instead of per basic block. Tracking per basic block was problematic since
not all statements in a basic block needed a discriminator and, also, later
optimizations could move statements between basic blocks making correlation
during AutoFDO compilation unreliable. Tracking per statement also allows
us to assign different discriminators to multiple function calls in the same
basic block. A subsequent patch will add that support.
The idea of this patch is based on commit

libcpp: Improve encapsulation of label_text
This adjusts the API of label_text so that the data members are private and cannot be modified by callers. Add accessors for them instead, and make the accessors const-correct. libcpp: Avoid pessimizing std::move [PR106272]
std::move in a return statement can prevent the NRVO: <https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2019/04/12/understanding-when-not-to-stdmove-in-c> PR106272 reports that we have two such cases in class label_text's member functions. We have -Wpessimizing-move that's supposed to detect problematic std::move uses, but in this case it didn't trigger. I've filed PR106276 to track that. PR preprocessor/106272 libcpp/ChangeLog: * include/line-map.h (class label_text): Don't std::move in a return statement. |

Convert label_text to C++11 move semantics
libcpp's class label_text stores a char * for a string and a flag saying whether it owns the buffer. I added this class before we could use C++11, and so to avoid lots of copying it required an explicit call to label_text::maybe_free to potentially free the buffer. Now that we can use C++11, this patch removes label_text::maybe_free in favor of doing the cleanup in the destructor, and using C++ move semantics to avoid any copying. This allows lots of messy cleanup code to be eliminated in favor of implicit destruction (mostly in the analyzer). No functional change intended. gcc/analyzer/ChangeLog: * call-info.cc (call_info::print): Update for removal of label_text::maybe_free in favor of automatic memory management. * checker-path.cc (checker_event::dump): Likewise. pch: Add support for PCH for relocatable executables [PR71934]
So, if we want to make PCH work for PIEs, I'd say we can: 1) add a new GTY option, say callback, which would act like skip for non-PCH and for PCH would make us skip it but remember for address bias translation 2) drop the skip for tree_translation_unit_decl::language 3) change get_unnamed_section to have const char * as last argument instead of const void *, change unnamed_section::data also to const char * and update everything related to that 4) maybe add a host hook whether it is ok to support binaries changing addresses (the only thing I'm worried is if some host that uses function descriptors allocates them dynamically instead of having them somewhere in the executable) 5) maybe add a gengtype warning if it sees in GTY tracked structure a function pointer without that new callback option Here is 1), 2), 3) implemented. Note, on stdc++.h.gch/O2g.gch there are just those 10 relocations without the second patch, with it a few more, but nothing huge. diagnostics: escape non-ASCII source bytes for certain diagnostics
This patch adds support to GCC's diagnostic subsystem for escaping certain
bytes and Unicode characters when quoting source code.
Specifically, this patch adds a new flag rich_location::m_escape_on_output
which is a hint from a diagnostic that non-ASCII bytes in the pertinent
lines of the user's source code should be escaped when printed.
The patch sets this for the following diagnostics:
- when complaining about stray bytes in the program (when these
are non-printable)
- when complaining about "null character(s) ignored");
- for -Wnormalized= (and generate source ranges for such warnings)
The escaping is controlled by a new option:
-fdiagnostics-escape-format=[unicode|bytes]
For example, consider a diagnostic involing a source line containing the
string "before" followed by the Unicode character U+03C0 ("GREEK SMALL
LETTER PI", with UTF-8 encoding 0xCF 0x80) followed by the byte 0xBF
(a stray UTF-8 trailing byte), followed by the string "after", where the
diagnostic highlights the U+03C0 character.
By default, this line will be printed verbatim to the user when
reporting a diagnostic at it, as:
beforeπXafter
^
(using X for the stray byte to avoid putting invalid UTF-8 in this
commit message)
If the diagnostic sets the "escape" flag, it will be printed as:
before<U+03C0><BF>after
^~~~~~~~
with -fdiagnostics-escape-format=unicode (the default), or as:
before<CF><80><BF>after
^~~~~~~~
if the user supplies -fdiagnostics-escape-format=bytes.
This only affects how the source is printed; it does not affect
how column numbers that are printed (as per -fdiagnostics-column-unit=
and -fdiagnostics-column-origin=).

Fix thinko in libcpp preparation patch for modules
The problem is that the new IS_MACRO_LOC macro:
inline bool
IS_MACRO_LOC (location_t loc)
{
return !IS_ORDINARY_LOC (loc) && !IS_ADHOC_LOC (loc);
}
is not fully correct since the position of the macro lines is not fixed:
/* Returns the lowest location [of a token resulting from macro
expansion] encoded in this line table. */
inline location_t
LINEMAPS_MACRO_LOWEST_LOCATION (const line_maps *set)
{
return LINEMAPS_MACRO_USED (set)
? MAP_START_LOCATION (LINEMAPS_LAST_MACRO_MAP (set))
: MAX_LOCATION_T + 1;
}
In Ada, LINEMAPS_MACRO_USED is false so LINEMAPS_MACRO_LOWEST_LOCATION is
MAX_LOCATION_T + 1, but IS_MACRO_LOC nevertheless returns true for anything
in the range [LINE_MAP_MAX_LOCATION; MAX_LOCATION_T], thus yielding an ICE
in linemap_macro_map_lookup for very large files.
libcpp/
* include/line-map.h (IS_MACRO_LOC): Delete.
* line-map.c (linemap_location_from_macro_expansion_p): Test
LINEMAPS_MACRO_LOWEST_LOCATION of the linemap.

c++: Macro location fixes [PR 98718]
This fixes some issues with macro maps. We were incorrectly calculating the number of macro expansions in a location span, and I had a workaround that partially covered that up. Further, while macro location spans are monotonic, that is not true of ordinary location spans. Thus we need to insert an indirection array when binary searching the latter. (We load ordinary locations before loading imports, but macro locations afterwards. We make sure an import location is de-macrofied, if needed.) Unlike a regular source file, it only contains a single location, and the source locations in that module are represented by ordinary locations whose 'included_from' location is the module. It also exposes some entry points that modules will use to create blocks of line maps. In the original posting, I'd missed the deletion of the linemap_enter_macro from internal.h. That's included here. libcpp/ * include/line-map.h (enum lc_reason): Add LC_MODULE. (MAP_MODULE_P): New. (line_map_new_raw): Declare. c-family: Macro support in -Wmisleading-indentation [PR80076]
Currently the -Wmisleading-indentation warning doesn't do any analysis
when the guarded statement or the statement after it is produced by a
macro. This means we warn for:
if (flag)
foo ();
bar ();
but not for:
#define BAR bar
if (flag)
foo ();
BAR ();
This patch extends the -Wmisleading-indentation implementation to
support analyzing such statements and their tokens. This is done in the
"natural" way by resolving the location of each of the three tokens to
the token's macro expansion point. (Additionally, if the tokens all
resolve to the same macro expansion point then we instead use their
locations within the macro definition.) When these resolved locations
are all different, then we can proceed with applying the warning
heuristics to them as if no macros were involved.
gcc/c-family/ChangeLog:
PR c/80076
* c-indentation.c (should_warn_for_misleading_indentation): Move
declarations of local variables closer to their first use.
Handle virtual token locations by resolving them to their
respective macro expansion points. If all three tokens are
produced from the same macro expansion, then instead use their
loci within the macro definition.

Add diagnostic paths
This patch adds support for associating a "diagnostic_path" with a
diagnostic: a sequence of events predicted by the compiler that leads to
the problem occurring, with their locations in the user's source,
text descriptions, and stack information (for handling interprocedural
paths).
For example, the following (hypothetical) error has a 3-event
intraprocedural path:
test.c: In function 'demo':
test.c:29:5: error: passing NULL as argument 1 to 'PyList_Append' which
requires a non-NULL parameter
29 | PyList_Append(list, item);
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'demo': events 1-3
|
| 25 | list = PyList_New(0);
| | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~
| | |
| | (1) when 'PyList_New' fails, returning NULL
| 26 |
| 27 | for (i = 0; i < count; i++) {
| | ~~~
| | |
| | (2) when 'i < count'
| 28 | item = PyLong_FromLong(random());
| 29 | PyList_Append(list, item);
| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| | |
| | (3) when calling 'PyList_Append', passing NULL from (1) as argument 1
|
The patch adds a new "%@" format code for printing event IDs, so that
in the above, the description of event (3) mentions event (1), showing
the user where the bogus NULL value comes from (the event IDs are
colorized to draw the user's attention to them).
There is a separation between data vs presentation: the above shows how
the diagnostic-printing code has consolidated the path into a single run
of events, since all the events are near each other and within the same
function; more complicated examples (such as interprocedural paths)
might be printed as multiple runs of events.
Examples of how interprocedural paths are printed can be seen in the
test suite (which uses a plugin to exercise the code without relying
on specific warnings using this functionality).
Other output formats include
- JSON,
- printing each event as a separate "note", and
- to not emit paths.

Replace label_text ctor with "borrow" and "take"
libcpp's label_text class wraps a text buffer, along with a flag to determine if it "owns" the buffer. The existing ctor exposed this directly, but I found it difficult to remember the sense of flag, so this patch hides the ctor, in favor of static member functions "borrow" and "take", to make the effect on ownership explicit in the name. gcc/c-family/ChangeLog: * c-format.c (range_label_for_format_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor called with true with label_text::take. gcc/c/ChangeLog: * c-objc-common.c (range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor calls. gcc/cp/ChangeLog: * error.c (range_label_for_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor calls with label_text::borrow. gcc/ChangeLog: * gcc-rich-location.c (maybe_range_label_for_tree_type_mismatch::get_text): Replace label_text ctor call with label_text::borrow. * gcc-rich-location.h (text_range_label::get_text): Replace label_text ctor called with false with label_text::borrow. libcpp/ChangeLog: * include/line-map.h (label_text::label_text): Make private. Fix ICE with #line directive (PR c/89410)
PR c/89410 reports various issues with #line directives with very large numbers; one of them is an ICE inside diagnostic-show-locus.c when emitting a diagnostic at line 0xffffffff. The issue is that the arithmetic in layout::calculate_line_spans to determine if two line spans are sufficiently close to consolidate was using the unsigned 32-bit linenum_type, which was overflowing when comparing the line for the expanded location with those of the location range (all on line 0xffffffff), leading to it erroneously adding two spans for the same line, leading to an assertion failure. This patch fixes the ICE by generalizing the use of long long in line-map.h's comparison function for linenum_type into a new linenum_arith_t typedef, and using it here. Doing so uncovered a second problem: the loop to print the lines within the line_span for this case is infinite: looping from 0xfffffff upwards, overflowing to 0, and then never becoming greater than 0xfffffff. The patch fixes this by using linenum_arith_t there also. gcc/ChangeLog: PR c/89410 * diagnostic-show-locus.c (layout::calculate_line_spans): Use linenum_arith_t when determining if two adjacent line spans are close enough to merge. Less verbose fix-it hints for missing header files (PR 87091)
This patch tweaks maybe_add_include_fixit so that if we're emitting a note
about adding the header file, the note's primary location will be replaced
by that of the fix-it hint, to avoid repeating a location we've already
emitted (or one close to it).
For example, this simplifies:
../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:27: error: msg 1
87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>;
| ^~~~~~
../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:22: note: msg 2
73 | # include <debug/vector>
+++ |+#include <vector>
74 | #endif
....
87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>;
| ^~~
to:
../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:87:27: error: msg 1
87 | using vector = std::vector<_Tp, polymorphic_allocator<_Tp>>;
| ^~~~~~
../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:74:1: note: msg 2
73 | # include <debug/vector>
+++ |+#include <vector>
74 | #endif
eliminating the repetition of line 87 in the note.
Doing so requires converting show_caret_p to a tri-state, to avoid
meaninglessly printing a caret for the first column in the next line
(and colorizing it):
../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3/include/vector:74:1: note: msg 2

diagnostics: add labeling of source ranges
This patch adds the ability to label source ranges within a rich_location,
to be printed by diagnostic_show_locus.
For example:
pr69554-1.c:11:18: error: invalid operands to binary + (have 'const char *' and 'const char *')
11 | return (p + 1) + (q + 1);
| ~~~~~~~ ^ ~~~~~~~
| | |
| | const char *
| const char *
The patch implements labels for various type mismatch errors in the C and
C++ frontends, and in -Wformat. I implemented it wherever accurate location
information was guaranteed (there are other places that could benefit, but
we need better location information in those places).
The labels can be disabled via -fno-diagnostics-show-labels.
Similarly:
param-type-mismatch.C: In function 'int test_1(int, int, float)':
param-type-mismatch.C:11:27: error: invalid conversion from 'int' to 'const char*' [-fpermissive]
11 | return callee_1 (first, second, third);
| ^~~~~~
| |
| int
param-type-mismatch.C:7:43: note: initializing argument 2 of 'int callee_1(int, const char*, float)'
7 | extern int callee_1 (int one, const char *two, float three);
| ~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~
where the first "error" describing the bad argument gets a label
describing the type inline (since it's non-obvious from "second").
The "note" describing the type of the param of the callee *doesn't*
get a label, since that information is explicit there in the
source ("const char *two").
The idea is that in any diagnostic where two aspects of the source aren't
in sync it ought to be easier for the user if we directly show them the
mismatching aspects inline (e.g. types).
As well as type mismatch errors, perhaps labels could also be used for
buffer overflow warnings, for describing the capacity of the destination
buffer vs the size of what's being written:
sprintf (buf, "filename: %s\n", file);
^~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~^~~
| |
capacity: 32 10 + strlen(file) + 2
or somesuch. Another idea might be for macro expansion warnings:
warning: repeated side effects in macro expansion...
x = MIN (p++, q++);
~~~~^~~~~~~~~~
note: ...expanded here as
#define MIN(X,Y) (X<Y?X:Y)
^~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
| | | | | |
| | | | | q++
| | | | p++
| | | q++
| q++ p++
p++
The patch removes some logic from multiline.exp which special-cased
lines ending with a '|' character (thus complicating testing of this
patch). I believe that this was a vestige from experiments I did to
support strippng dg directives from the output; it was present in the
earliest version of multiline.exp I posted:
